A comparison between the HX5 and the WP10 from roughly the same distance but from different spots and taken on different days. <br />
The quality from the Samsung is not bad at all.<br />
<br />
Both are lossless crops, so you can compare the original quality.<br />
<br />

Today I shot my camera guy - several times.<br />
<br />
Went to the store and told him I wanted to figure out if my Samsung WP10 had a malfunction or if another WP10 would behave in the same way. After I made myself clear, I got a second WP10 and and shot several flash fotos of him in the store with both cameras to see if the cameras had the same problems as described in my post:<a href="http://samsung-wp10.blogspot.com/2010/06/samsung-wp10-aq100-stabilisation.html"> Samsung WP10 / AQ100 - stabilisation</a><br />
<br />
Conclusion: While in wide angle the WP10 uses often 1/45 sec indoors for flash, the moment you use zoom even at 2 x the speed goes up to 1/80 sec and at 5 x maxes out at 1/100 sec, My hands are apparently not sturdy enough to steady the camera with one hand without mechanical stabilisation, so I need to hold the camera with 2 hands and concentrate while shooting the flash picture. In my tainted opinion the store WP10 did a bit clearer pictures, so I exchanged mine for that one.<br />

The 720p from the WP10 surpasses their full HD and we have a real 5 x zoom a good camera and are waterproof. <br />
Way to eradicate a whole segment of low quality pocket cams Samsung, well done!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
After a few days playing with the WP10 and comparing her with the Pentax Optio WS80 I made up my mind to keep the Samsung.<br />
The why part you will read in my WP10 vs WS80 post in a couple days, but on a short notice so far I am quite fond of her as you can tell from the blog top graphic I made.<br />
It took me more than 30 shots until I found the right angle and got the reflections on the WP10 chrome bumper just the way I wanted it. My goal was to capture the soft curves of the camera and particular the retro style of the lens protrusion, the Caribbean blue of the front plate and the esthetic of the chrome bumper what protects the camera around all 4 corners. It was time well spend if I look at the result.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8061307439803543497.post-31981321932618263672010-07-03T22:16:00.001+01:002010-07-08T01:22:48.766+01:00Samsung WP10 / AQ100 - PICTURES smart auto mode<span style="color: orange;">2010-7-3 17.31</span><b><i style="color: #38761d;"><br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><b><br />
</b> </span><br />
<br />
Let´s put the Samsung WP10 or Samsung AQ100 as she is called in the USA to the test. This first part is just the WP10 in Smart Auto mode.<br />
<a name='more'></a>The blue with the chrome bumper around reminds me of the 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNoOMTpmjI/AAAAAAAACfM/rKAhAZnKPtA/s1600/1956-Chevrolet-Bel-Air-blue-white-ma.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="440" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNoOMTpmjI/AAAAAAAACfM/rKAhAZnKPtA/s640/1956-Chevrolet-Bel-Air-blue-white-ma.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
So we got off on a good start.<br />
Since the battery was charged and I had my Hx5 with me, I just swapped the 16 Gb card and went shooting.<br />
<br />
The Samsung WP10 was left in Smart Auto (SA) just as she came out of the box.<br />
The pictures will be lossless cropped to 1600 pixel to show the original quality if nothing else is mentioned. The exif data is intact.<br />
<br />
<br />
If you are in SA, the macro button is pushed automatically<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNwkTNMJ_I/AAAAAAAACfQ/sxR0xhw_i90/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNwkTNMJ_I/AAAAAAAACfQ/sxR0xhw_i90/s640/Samsung+WP10+test01.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNwtb9PZGI/AAAAAAAACfU/cthwWr92SXs/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNwtb9PZGI/AAAAAAAACfU/cthwWr92SXs/s640/Samsung+WP10+test02.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I was aiming for the spotted part (below in picture) and the WP10 confirmed that, but the slightest movement changes the focused part. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNxFE5jBaI/AAAAAAAACfY/VAnF_grFHYE/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNxFE5jBaI/AAAAAAAACfY/VAnF_grFHYE/s640/Samsung+WP10+test03.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN11zloOSI/AAAAAAAACgI/aj6r8bV-MbY/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN11zloOSI/AAAAAAAACgI/aj6r8bV-MbY/s640/Samsung+WP10+test10.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
The WP10 goofed here, with full zoom only 1/100 sec but the F set to 10.9 no wonder this<br />
picture is blurred. Since there is only digital image stabilisation and you can not switch that on in SA.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN1n4nOSnI/AAAAAAAACgA/VtqAO56Ji2c/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN1n4nOSnI/AAAAAAAACgA/VtqAO56Ji2c/s640/Samsung+WP10+test11.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Here I tried the street shooting pose, just holding the camera below the waist line and shooting while walking. Again problem with the non existing image stabilisation. The only way to have an influence on the shutter speed it to choose the children mode. It is similar to the HX5 sports mode.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN1TVgxBgI/AAAAAAAACf4/YrJlNBvsoS0/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN1TVgxBgI/AAAAAAAACf4/YrJlNBvsoS0/s640/Samsung+WP10+test09.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN1K6OD8sI/AAAAAAAACfw/gD-8tXzdhsg/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test08.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN1K6OD8sI/AAAAAAAACfw/gD-8tXzdhsg/s640/Samsung+WP10+test08.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
How far can 5x (175 mm) reach?<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN03jsFaCI/AAAAAAAACfo/INXlS1eprAU/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN03jsFaCI/AAAAAAAACfo/INXlS1eprAU/s640/Samsung+WP10+test07.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNzpH-W1VI/AAAAAAAACfc/ynJmokuuL8Y/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCNzpH-W1VI/AAAAAAAACfc/ynJmokuuL8Y/s640/Samsung+WP10+test05.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I took this shot pretty quick, so even with flash it is a bit unsharp<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN3RJ4nHMI/AAAAAAAAChA/WXVXrCfydNw/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN3RJ4nHMI/AAAAAAAAChA/WXVXrCfydNw/s640/Samsung+WP10+test20.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
To capture an object through a window pane can take several tries to get the optimal result because of reflections which throw of the autofocus.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN3Gw1MlhI/AAAAAAAACg4/bWCfLc1DHjU/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN3Gw1MlhI/AAAAAAAACg4/bWCfLc1DHjU/s640/Samsung+WP10+test19.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
If you can put the camera plane with the lens on the window pane and then even the flash can not mess up the picture.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN29QDuE7I/AAAAAAAACgw/KVUxm4VWMx4/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test18.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN29QDuE7I/AAAAAAAACgw/KVUxm4VWMx4/s640/Samsung+WP10+test18.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN2wZd9cjI/AAAAAAAACgo/Mm9WSkC9A84/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN2wZd9cjI/AAAAAAAACgo/Mm9WSkC9A84/s640/Samsung+WP10+test17.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Again the problem if you move the camera too fast while taking a snapshot as you walk by. Even the flash could not prevent the slight blur.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN2fAIEOXI/AAAAAAAACgg/PklNc16V-M0/s1600/Samsung+WP10+test16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCN2fAIEOXI/AAAAAAAACgg/PklNc16V-M0/s640/Samsung+WP10+test16.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

When your display looks totally washed out even there is no bright area in the picture you are framing then you are shooting into something bright like the setting sun. Even if it is not framed the big lens cover pane catches the glare and messes up the exposure. Shield the lens with your hand and it will be measured more correctly but you still might need to use exposure compensation. IA get fooled the same as P mode.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
--------- <br />
<br />
If you want to make sure your video is in focus, half depress the shutter. You are in focus if the tiny green led goes steady and if you have the sounds activated, you hear the focus lock sound (same as with pictures). Also the Smart Scene Selection lets you focus up to 4 cm close.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCyq8ObUaPI/AAAAAAAACpw/J1km5SvPJfM/s1600/SAM_0126.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCyq8ObUaPI/AAAAAAAACpw/J1km5SvPJfM/s640/SAM_0126.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
If you want to get even closer, activate the stabilisation and the WP10 brings you even closer - electronically.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCyq3OqkRDI/AAAAAAAACpo/UWTVGApZtug/s1600/SAM_0125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCyq3OqkRDI/AAAAAAAACpo/UWTVGApZtug/s640/SAM_0125.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
You can dismiss the Smart Filters Vignetting and Fish-eye. They only work in VGA or QVGA resolution and the quality is terrible.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCyvWKxo19I/AAAAAAAACp4/m4RnahiFM9k/s1600/SAM_0132.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCyvWKxo19I/AAAAAAAACp4/m4RnahiFM9k/s640/SAM_0132.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
----<br />
<br />
The WP10 has the tendency to mess up shots at least with my not so sturdy hands. A couple comments from owners seem to confirm that they too have blurry pictures. <br />
In some situations (5 x zoom and some indoor flash fotos) I got an up to 4:1 ratio. Take at least 4 shots to get a perfect one. These were taken 30 sec apart same setting, distance, full zoom and way to hold the camera. Out of 5 shots, one was barely OK. 3 were blurry and one was perfect. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjj4kKr9qI/AAAAAAAACl4/JEk4LkQ6vlg/s1600/samsung+wp10+compare+bad.jpg"><img border="0" height="453" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjj4kKr9qI/AAAAAAAACl4/JEk4LkQ6vlg/s320/samsung+wp10+compare+bad.jpg" width="300" /></a> . <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjkJ0JljGI/AAAAAAAACl8/RgEppxelknE/s1600/samsung+wp10+compare+good.jpg"><img border="0" height="453" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjkJ0JljGI/AAAAAAAACl8/RgEppxelknE/s320/samsung+wp10+compare+good.jpg" width="300" /></a><br />
<br />
After some intensive testing it seems best to turn the WP10 into the Scene Mode: Children, for the least chance of blurry pictures (Samsungs sports mode) .<br />
It is also a good idea, to take shots a couple of times. Since the Samsung WP10 can do gorgeous fotos as easy as make a total mess out of a shooting situation it is vital to either check the shot with full magnification to see if it turned out sharp. Or if you are in a hurry, take a few shots and maybe change the angle a bit in every one. It is more easy to sort it out at home on the big screen of the pc than on the little one from the WP10.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8061307439803543497.post-63936731546677080222010-06-30T09:18:00.000+01:002010-06-30T10:24:01.854+01:00Samsung WP10 / AQ100 - insiderSo far except for some Samsung own blogs I did not find any review.<br />

<br />
The Sony HX5 has the best video image stabilisation of any pocket travel zoom so far, so how does the Samsung WP10 compare?<br />
<br />
5 x zoom with no stabilisation<br />
<object height="385" width="640"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ga1uPlLhUcg&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ga1uPlLhUcg&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object><br />
<br />
<br />
5 x zoom from the same position with digital image stabilisation. Notice the image is is cropped on all sides and then resized to 720p. This brings visible degradation in quality. <br />
<br />
<object height="385" width="640"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rRIS5A5wyos&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rRIS5A5wyos&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object><br />
<br />
How is the resolution compared to the Sony HX5 720 p mode? Let´s make a few clips and take a screen capture.<br />
<br />
HX5 with the visible barrel distortion at wide angle<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCOW0IutuyI/AAAAAAAAChc/C2T-HqnsilA/s1600/HX5+vs+WP10+video+resolution+HX5+1.0x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCOW0IutuyI/AAAAAAAAChc/C2T-HqnsilA/s640/HX5+vs+WP10+video+resolution+HX5+1.0x.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
HX5 with much less barrel distortion at 1.5 x zoom <br />
Should be gone by 1.7 x zoom, below 1.4 x zoom it was still very visible.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCOW5-FmiKI/AAAAAAAAChg/Lq69Sa_Ml9o/s1600/HX5+vs+WP10+video+resolution+HX5+1.5x.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCOW5-FmiKI/AAAAAAAAChg/Lq69Sa_Ml9o/s640/HX5+vs+WP10+video+resolution+HX5+1.5x.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />

The WP10 does focus from 50 cm, macro is not selectable. BUT if you put her in Smart Scene Detection, the she detects a macro and focuses from 5 cm.<br />
<br />
<br />
5 cm normal mode<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCR-mZI5hJI/AAAAAAAACh0/a75pwJZgO8s/s1600/SAM_0276.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCR-mZI5hJI/AAAAAAAACh0/a75pwJZgO8s/s640/SAM_0276.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
5 cm Smart Scene Detection<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCR-gb4ndvI/AAAAAAAAChs/VfEaXjzys3s/s1600/SAM_0275.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCR-gb4ndvI/AAAAAAAAChs/VfEaXjzys3s/s640/SAM_0275.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The WP10 can make a screen shot from every position of the video in playback mode. This 2 were done with that function. There is also a tiny nearly not visible in bright light green led what shows you a focus lock by stopping flashing when you half depress the shutter.<br />
<br />
Sadly the HX5 has not such an indication, so it will be guesswork how close you can go. This is from about 3 to 5 cm distance. The HX5 switches automatically into macro mode. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCSBhVv5zXI/AAAAAAAACh8/_yEs6OHRYuY/s1600/MAH01572.MP4_000009400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCSBhVv5zXI/AAAAAAAACh8/_yEs6OHRYuY/s640/MAH01572.MP4_000009400.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The displays on both cameras are not able to tell you if you are just a bit out of focus.<br />
<br />
And here now on a pocket tripod using the Smart Scene Detection so the focus starts at 5 cm 2 videos starring the Gran Canaria Lagartos or Dinos how we call them.<br />

I planned to do a thorough comparison between these both since they are in the same very cheap price range, Samsung WP10 149€ vs Pentax Optio WS80 155€.<br />
With underwater shots and videos etc, the full works.<br />
<br />
After one day I stopped the tests, since the WS80 was a true OPTIO.<br />
You do not know what OPTIO stands for?<br />
Want to see for your self? OK enter at your own risk.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCk3fAB-iCI/AAAAAAAACmQ/dkIyqbsCE-U/s1600/optio.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCk3fAB-iCI/AAAAAAAACmQ/dkIyqbsCE-U/s640/optio.gif" width="426" /></a></div><br />
All shots were taken in full auto mode, several shots were taken and the best selected. The 5 x zoom got from both cameras more miss than hit pictures. <br />

I could watch this clip without getting motion sickness and the quality of the cropped and then resized video (the way most digital video stabilisation works) is still acceptable.<br />

the Pentax Optio WS80 <br />

<object height="385" width="640"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/KxuS-wYCu8E&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/KxuS-wYCu8E&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object><br />
<br />
While the WP10 uses the newer and more effective AVCHD the WS80 uses MJPEG in an AVI container what results in 3 times as big files and worse compression quality.<br />
<br />
To properly see the difference, adjust the angle of your screen and concentrate on the white to blue sky area<br />
<br />
WS80<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TClAtDWRxXI/AAAAAAAACm4/qy34GwKXzEg/s1600/Pentax+optio+ws80+compression+artefacts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TClAtDWRxXI/AAAAAAAACm4/qy34GwKXzEg/s640/Pentax+optio+ws80+compression+artefacts.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>The video clarity is not too bad from the WS80 if the camera is on a tripod.<br />
<br />
WP10<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TClBcJAWOlI/AAAAAAAACm8/7AdwalN2oCk/s1600/samsung+wp10++compression+artefacts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TClBcJAWOlI/AAAAAAAACm8/7AdwalN2oCk/s640/samsung+wp10++compression+artefacts.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Here in short some differences<br />
<br />
The WS10 has a wide angle and a panorama mode. Sounds good, but the results are disappointing. In wide angle you take the WS80 in portrait mode, shoot the first frame, and align the second shot to a ghost image form the first shot what occupies a part of the screen.<br />
The result is a less than 6 MP picture with some stitching errors and some smearing.<br />
The panorama is shot the same way just in landscape mode and you take 3 shots what result in a less than 4 MP picture.<br />
<br />
The access doors from the WP10 are more easy to open while the WS80 needs some more fingernail action. To remove the memory card Samsung goofed since the card is flush with the casing you need you thumbnail to poke the card in, to get it out.<br />
<br />
The WP80 not only has the less than stellar video codec, they also disabled the optical zoom but you got 5 x digital zoom, the results are horrible. Samsung has no problem, good codec, optical zoom clear video and a not too bad image stabilisation with some loss of quality because of cropping and resizing.<br />

<br />
The full horror of the Pentax "digital zoom only" at 5.7 x <br />
<br />
As you the on the top foto, the box sizes are quite different. That is because Samsung just went for the absolute minimum. The camera with battery, a short usb cable a usb charger and a wrist strap. The manual is on CD and the quick start is printed.<br />
<br />
I could go on, but even if the Qptio would be half the price from the Samsung, there would be no way I would prefer her even then.<br />
But what really impressed me with the Pentax Optio WP80 was the absence of a focus assist light. Now normally that would mean that in low light situations the WP80 would be bad to find the focus, but quite on the contrary. The Pentax has the most effective low light focusing I have ever seen and outperforms the Samsung and even the Sony.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8061307439803543497.post-20996846825501557502010-06-28T16:06:00.000+01:002010-06-29T19:54:12.302+01:00Samsung WP10 / AQ100 - stabilisation<span style="color: orange;">2010-6-29 19.45</span><br />
My last camera without an image stabilisation was the 2 MP Canon A60 and I barely had any unsharp picture with her.<br />
The main unhappyness I have with the Samsung WP10 is the lack of a real stabilisation.<br />
Sure there is the digital stabilisation but that is a just not an alternative.<br />
<br />
Let me give you a couple examples so you get an idea and as usual all pictures are original lossless crops. Click on the picture for the original cropped size and quality.<br />

<b>So just use flash and every thing is ok?</b><br />
Sadly no, 2 shots I took from my camera guy, both with flash turned out crappy. Let´s find out why. Here he was walking towards me and you can see the back is clearer than his face<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjCErJY5vI/AAAAAAAAClc/bFegpawpwm4/s1600/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjCErJY5vI/AAAAAAAAClc/bFegpawpwm4/s640/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a1.JPG" width="640" /></a></div> I reshot this today we both were motionless and it came out better but still unacceptable. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjCyVP2KoI/AAAAAAAAClg/wfqyzsWPyOs/s1600/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjCyVP2KoI/AAAAAAAAClg/wfqyzsWPyOs/s640/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a2.JPG" width="630" /></a></div>Checking the lower part of the foto, I discovered why some of my flash pictures are blurry. You can clearly see the Qptio WS80 print on the box has a ghosting in the vertical direction. It looks to me the WP10 is using a slow sync flash modus like in a twilight portrait to keep the surrounding landscape visible. So with this error in the not so intelligent mode my shutter pressing what results in vertical camera movement results then in a blurry foto. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjC2ReddMI/AAAAAAAAClk/mLvS6jyNZBI/s1600/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjC2ReddMI/AAAAAAAAClk/mLvS6jyNZBI/s640/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a3.JPG" width="630" /></a></div> This picture was taken one minute after the first one of my camera guy, the settings were the same but I think to remember I needed some time to frame this shot from the post card stand and these fine folks were just browsing and I used both hands to hold the camera.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjDj4vP9bI/AAAAAAAAClo/0Cjp76DmykQ/s1600/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjDj4vP9bI/AAAAAAAAClo/0Cjp76DmykQ/s640/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test+a4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Yes there is, instead of holding the Samsung WP10 like this</div><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCi7eYSizII/AAAAAAAAClU/QS3ya0EObOM/s1600/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test28.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="406" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCi7eYSizII/AAAAAAAAClU/QS3ya0EObOM/s640/Samsung+WP10+image+stabilisation+test28.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Here is what the Samsung UK website states today the 28 of June 2010:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjO331H_gI/AAAAAAAAClw/FFvmu8bIXBk/s1600/samsung+wp10+uk.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="555" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjO331H_gI/AAAAAAAAClw/FFvmu8bIXBk/s640/samsung+wp10+uk.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> Even the tiniest shake can ruin your shot. <span style="color: red;">You are so right here!</span> Dual Image Stabilisation solves that. <span style="color: red;">To bad the WP10 does not have that, so why do you mention that on your Samsung UK WP10 website?</span> Samsung has combined the revolutionary technology of their ultimate Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) mechanism with the advanced algorithms of Digital Image Stabilisation (DIS). <span style="color: red;">That´s great, but the WP10 does not have it!!!</span> Giving you sharp images no matter the condition. <span style="color: red;">No it does not with the WP10</span> Whether it’s low light, zooming or just a case of plain old shaky hands, your photos come out sharp and clear. <span style="color: red;">No they do not with the WP10 </span>So let your Samsung camera shake things up. <span style="color: red;">Yes you do that</span> In a good way. You call this good? <span style="color: red;">Fire your webmaster, you should be liable for that false information you tell here.</span><br />
<br />
Here is what the Samsung Germany website states today the 28 of June 2010:<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjO6N-c7iI/AAAAAAAACl0/VTnHamVowqw/s1600/samsung+wp10+de1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjO6N-c7iI/AAAAAAAACl0/VTnHamVowqw/s1600/samsung+wp10+de1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="632" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_HXaPyG-SY44/TCjO6N-c7iI/AAAAAAAACl0/VTnHamVowqw/s640/samsung+wp10+de1.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
Here they explain, that the image stabilisation takes 2 shots, one fast to get the pixel crisp and one normal to get the color information. Then the two are merged together with some clever processing and this is why <b style="color: red;">you can not use the flash with the image stabilisation! BUMMER</b><br />
<br />
-----<br />
After trying out several shooting techniques here is the best way to shoot blur free.<br />
4 sharp fotos out of 5 selecting Scene and then Children. This is the high speed mode from the camera it activates also constant autofocus.<br />
3 sharp fotos out of 5 selecting Program and set the ISO to 200. Your trade sharpness for acceptable grain.<br />
2 sharp fotos out of 4 selecting Program and activating image stabilisation. <br />
With 1 slightly sharp foto out of 5 Smart Auto lands on the last place.<br />
Holding the camera with both hands makes a bit of a difference.<br />

Pictures were taken in 5 x zoom<br />

The nice thing about a water resistant camera is that you suddenly can do all the crazy things you ever wanted but knew it would kill your equipment if you did so.<br />
<br />
Let´s start by sticking the Samsung WP10 carefully a bit into the sand so we can shot the waves up close and personal.<br />
Luckily the bright blue color made her easy to spot when she was swept away from the surf.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<object height="385" width="640"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/iaWR1MmNnNc&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/iaWR1MmNnNc&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object><br />
Next time I try that and screw her on a pocket tripod what I will fix in place with a stone.<br />
<br />
Did that an here is the result:<br />
<object height="385" width="640"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RD7e1Ol9lTQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RD7e1Ol9lTQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&color1=0xe1600f&color2=0xfebd01" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object><br />
<br />
Trying out the Samsung WP10 snorkeling I could not see anything on the display except reflections. The water was murky and I just did point, click and hope. 80% of the pictures were unusable, but when the WP10 was close enough she could capture with good detail.<br />
Will try on another location with more clear water for final verdict and the display will greatly benefit from a hood like the Super Magic Mirror what I have on my HX1 and HX5.<br />
<br />

After swimming on the surface and less than 3 feet below I was kind of puzzled how sand was inside the seal of the memory card compartment. There was absolutely no moisture though. But I understand now why Samsung shows in the manual to clean the seals with a q-tip afterwards. <br />
A single sand grain can be very tiny and just one on top of the seal lip is enough to let liquid in.<br />

<br />
I think the sand might have hidden in the spring area and could be from the first time the WP10 got submerged and then swept over the sand . Then after several times opening and closing the memory card compartment may have been able to sneak into the seal.<br />
<div style="color: #cc0000;">Note to self: Rinse well after the beach, then blow water out of spring areas and then open the doors.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
